Between federal and most state incentive programs, consumers can now see tax credits that cover up to half, in some cases over 60%, of their home solar power systems. There's a lot more to solar energy homes than just putting panels on your roof. The central theme for solar energy is "clean energy and conservation." The conceptual solar home is one that does not use dirty energy and uses all energy wisely.
In the United States, consumers can receive tax credits of 30% of the costs, up to $1,500, for improvements to their existing homes for windows, doors, insulation, HVAC, biomass stoves, and roofs. These savings are available through 2010. Further savings are available for geothermal heat pumps, solar panels, solar water heaters, wind energy systems, and fuel cells. The tax credits for these are 30% of the cost with no limit, and they are available through 2016.
 You can obtain a solar energy tax credit of 30% of the cost of your solar panels regardless of the total cost of installing solar panels, or photovoltaic system, in your home. This tax credit applies to existing homes and those currently under construction, running from 2009 through 2016. To qualify for the tax credit, your solar panels must come with a Manufacturer's Certification Statement. That's a signed statement from the manufacturer confirming that the solar panels qualify for the tax credit. Retain a copy of this certificate. However, you won't need to submit it with your annual tax return. But there are a few conditions. Your photovoltaic system must provide electricity for your home. It must also meet all the fire and electrical code requirements in your State. In addition, the system must have been placed in service before 31 December 2016.
